As early as 1985, the Human Space Program President and Chairman of the Board, Frank White, was developing the “Harvard Space Program,” an effort to engage all the Schools and Faculties at Harvard University in the key questions facing humanity as we leave the planet of our birth.

On April 6, 2016, White, in concert with Irene Porro, Director of the McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning at Framingham State University, launched the “Academy in Space Initiative.”

Its purpose was to engage academics from around the world and in a multiplicity of disciplines to address key questions connected with human migration into the solar ecosystem.

These initiatives are the predecessor of The Human Space Program and have now been folded into the larger effort.
